Like the wallet, the keychain is an every-day-carry. But is everything you’re carrying something you need everyday? I used to carry a key to everything I had locked up, in my pocket. It was loud, bulky, uncomfortable and most of the time unused. I switched to a carabiner out of necessity, but happened to love the freedom it offered my pockets. That feeling of freedom I wanted to explore. I started looking critically at the things I would keep on my keychain and came to the conclusion that the only things I needed on there, were the keys to my truck and the keys to my house.
I’ve reduced my keychain from having some cutesy ornaments or having those mini savings cards (1/2 a dozen) to having only the essentials. Right now, I have just 5 keys on my chain. Truck, Car, House back door, House front door, and Garage/Shed. It’s lightweight, and out of my pockets with the carabiner. The keys to my motorcycle can be kept indoors. I don’t need access to the keys to my motorcycle on my daily keychain, because I don’t ride my bike all the time. But I do drive the car or truck and need access to my house. So, the extra keys of my life can stay indoors, off my carabiner and out of my pockets. But there are some other gadgets that I’ve always wanted to try.
I recently purchased a keychain organizer. I love my carabiner, but there are times (like when I’m wearing dress pants), that I don’t want to clip my keys onto a belt loop, or have a bulky mass of metal in one of my pockets. Instead, I’ve opted for the clip-on key organizer. All my keys in once place, and it clips to the inside of my pocket like a pocketknife would.
Keep your life styled with the necessary essentials and nothing more. See the comparison in size and bulkiness of a friend of mine’s carabiner keychain. And check out my other posts: Every Day Carry, and The Wallet for more information.
